Tutorial & free pattern: Turtleneck for babies - Cuello alto para bebés

I promised it a few months ago (how time flies!) and here it is! The pattern and the tutorial of the turtleneck for babies!

I sewed two of them when Bubu was 18 months old, but she is still wearing them 4 months after. Try comparing the pattern with a t-shirt before cutting, to ensure that it’s going to fit your baby.

Let’s begin!!

Download the pattern here for free. And print it.

No seam allowance is included in the pattern.

Remember to sew with a stretch stitch on knits.

~~&~~

We are going to do the “open” shoulder part first, where the snaps are going to be.

Fold the “flap” of the back piece two times like shown (marked in the pattern with a broken line and with a red line in the picture). I cut the seam allowance here, because otherwise you have too many fabric layers when folded. You may add some interfacing in between, but that depends on the snaps you’re using.

~~&~~

And now fold the “flap” of the front piece two times again, but be careful, because one of the fold lines is now the seam allowance one (see pic).

~~&~~

Once they are stitched, they should look like this.

~~&~~

Una vez cosidas deberían quedar así.

Then pin and sew the shoulder part where there aren’t going to be any snaps.

~~&~~

Now we’ll do all the hems, for the sleeves and for the body. I used the double needle for a nicer finish (for the plain green one I tried a zig zag – I don’t like it that much), you can do it like you want.

~~&~~

We’re joining the sleeves to the body now. But before doing that, pin the two flaps of the open shoulder together, so that it doesn’t move. The flap of the front piece goes on top of the back piece. You can do a few stitches (where the red line is) to ensure it really doesn’t move later.

~~&~~

You can now attach the sleeves to the body.

~~&~~

Ahora podéis coser las mangas al cuerpo.

Then pin and stitch the sides with right sides together.

~~&~~

Y después cosed los costados, derechos encarados.

Now it’s time to do the neck.

Fold the neck piece like shown. And use the pattern piece to mark where you are going to stitch (the broken line on the pattern).

~~&~~

Then attach the collar to the shirt. Pin them and when you sew them together make sure you get the three layers.

~~&~~

Follow the stitched line you already have in the shoulder opening to stitch a line on the collar too.

~~&~~

So that the seams lay flat where they peek out, I did a few hand stitches. And that’s 6 times: 2x collar, 2x sleeves, 2x bottom of the side seams.

~~&~~

The last step is to sew / attach the snaps.

Decide if you want them to be seen –kam snaps- or not –there are other sorts of snaps. I didn’t want them to be seen, so I sewed some invisible snaps.

[I only put one normal snap in the starred T-shirt because I ran out of the transparent ones and folding the collar it wasn’t going to be seen. But next time I’m using kam snaps, it’s easier!!]

~~&~~

If your baby is going to wear the collar always rolled down, you can hand stitch the vertical edges together, this way the collar won’t move (and you’ll save one snap).

~~&~~

And you’re done!

I hope I have explained myself clearly, if not, don’t hesitate to ask or correct me!! Sometimes it’s very hard to write in English!!

I really would like to see it if you sew something with my very MODEST patterns, or if you simply were inspired here, that’s why I’ve created a Flickr Group called “Inspired by kuka & bubu”!! let’s see who’s going to be the first one to show something there… :-D

~~&~~

And now the last thing of all, the links to the fantastic crafty parties…
