Tutorial and free pattern: reversible vest and skirt – chaleco y falda reversibles (2)

It’s time we sew the skirt!
We only need four pieces, two for each side. I cut them like shown below (it’s just a sketch, there aren’t any proportions in the drawing).

¡Es hora de coser la falda!
Solamente necesitamos cuatro piezas, dos por lado. Se cortan como se ve abajo (es un esquema, no sigue las proporciones reales…).

First of all, sew the pieces of the waistband, right sides together, like indicated below. You must leave an opening which should measure the same as your baby’s waist + an extra inch. (Bubu’s waist is 20”, so I left a 21” opening. I think that otherwise it would be too tight when she sits down.)

Turn it inside out with patience, when you’re done.

Primero de todo, cosemos las piezas de la cintura, encarando derechos, como se ve en la foto. Tenemos que dejar una apertura que debería medir lo mismo que la cintura de tu bebé, añadiéndole algún centímetro extra. (Bubu hace 50 cm de cintura, así que dejé unos 53 cm abiertos. Creo que si no, le apretaría cuando se sienta.)

Dale la vuelta con paciencia cuando estés.

After that, sew the other two pieces together. Begin with one of the longest sides, then, unfold the fabric, so that you see both pieces and the seam that joins them in the center. Then fold the two pieces so that both ends of the seam come together and sew the short sides, to get a cylinder. Don’t forget to leave about 2 inches on every end not sewn, because this is going to be the placket.

At this point your skirt should look like that.

Después cosemos las otras dos piezas. Empezamos a coser uno de los lados largos, luego extendemos la tela, de manera que veamos ambas piezas con la costura en el centro. Entonces doblamos otra vez, pero haciendo que los finales de la costura se junten, y cosemos los lados cortos para obtener un cilindro. No debemos olvidar dejar unos 5 cm en cada final sin coser, porque será la apertura trasera de la falda.

Llegados a este punto la falda debería tener esta pinta.

Now turn it inside out, so that you see the right sides, and sew the placket (that’s the trickiest part of it).

Ahora gíralo todo del derecho y cose la apertura de detrás de la falda (esta es la parte más complicada).

Now gather the open side: sew two parallel basting lines around the top edge of the skirt and pull the ends of the threads till it gathers evenly and to the desired waist length. (I was lazy and did some pleats instead of gathering, it doesn't look that nice).

Ahora frunce la parte abierta: cose dos lineas paralelas tipo embasta y tira de los hilos hasta que se frunza uniformemente y el circulo mida la longitud de la cintura deseada. (Yo fui vaga y le hice unos pliegues en lugar de fruncir, y no queda tan bien, claro).

Finally, place the gathered part into the waistband-opening and sew it. I did it by hand, because I like how it looks, but you can do it with the machine.

Finalmente, mete la parte fruncida en la apertura de la cintura y cóselo. Yo lo hice a mano, porque me gusta como queda, pero se puede hacer a máquina.

I was looking for some inspiration, because I wanted to sew something for Bubu, when I thought of going to the Saturday’s market, to see if I could find some nice fabric there. How often is it the fabric what inspires you!

I had luck that day and I came home with five huge remnants that cost me 2€ each. A real bargain if you compare it with what they ask for that in shops here…

Then I saw it crystal clear: I would do a reversible vest and skirt!

Andaba yo buscando inspiración, porque quería coser algo para Bubu, cuando me fui al mercado del sábado, a ver si encontraba alguna tela chula. ¡Cuántas veces es la tela lo que nos inspira!

Tuve suerte y me volví a casa con cinco retales enormes, a 2€ cada uno. ¡Una ganga si lo comparas con lo que te cuesta en la tienda!

Entonces lo tuve claro: ¡le haría una falda y un chaleco reversibles!

I’ll begin with the vest today.

Draw and cut the six pieces (don’t forget the seam allowance when you cut) and place them right sides together. First of all sew the four shoulder parts, and then the rest like in the picture below. I left the neck part not sewn, because I wanted to do it hand stitched, but you can do it with the machine. Maybe it will be a bit more complicated to turn it inside out, because of the small opening.

La entrada de hoy la dedico al chaleco.

Marca y corta las seis piezas (no te olvides de dejar margen) y colócalas encarando los derechos. Primero cose las cuatro partes del hombro, y después el resto como en la foto de abajo. Yo dejé la parte de cuello sin coser, porque quería hacerlo a mano, pero se puede hacer a máquina. Lo único es que será un pelín más complicado de darle la vuelta porque las aperturas que quedan son pequeñas.

Once you’ve turned it inside out, sew the back of the neck (if you didn’t before) and both sides, and you’re done! You didn’t think it was so easy, did you?

Una vez lo hayas girado, cose la parte del cuello (si no lo has hecho antes) y los costados, y ¡ya está! ¿¿Verdad que no pensabais que fuera tan fácil??

If you want to try, you can download the pattern here. For the moment it fits a 9-11 month old baby, but I don’t know for how long it will still fit Bubu. Make a larger copy if you think it’s too small for your baby.

And attention! When you draw the two front pieces of the vest, remember to do the second one so that it is the mirror image of the first!

Si lo queréis intentar, podéis descargar el patrón aquí. De momento lo lleva un bebé de 9-11 meses, pero no sé hasta cuando lo podrá llevar Bubu. Haced una copia más grande del patrón si creéis que es demasiado pequeño para vuestro bebé.

¡Y cuidado! Cuando dibujéis las piezas delanteras del chaleco, ¡recordad que la segunda debe ser la imagen al espejo de la primera!

Valentina

This is Valentina, a 84 cm. giraffe I did some time ago. You must know I have a little collection of them, but Valentina is the only one handmade.

A few years ago, my hubby gave me a fantastic book for my birthday: “Die Arche Noah – nähen, quilten, applizieren” of Anne-Pia Godske Rasmussen. Two fabric pieces came with the present together… He wanted me to sew my own giraffe!

Os presento a Valentina, una jirafa de 84 cm. que hice hace un tiempo. Deberíais saber que tengo una colección de jirafas de tela y peluche, aunque Valentina es la única hecha a mano.

 
Hace un par de años, mi ahora marido me regaló un libro genial por mi cumpleaños: “Die Arche Noah – nähen, quilten, applizieren” de Anne-Pia Godske Rasmussen. En el mismo paquete había dos retales… ¡Quería que cosiera mi propia jirafa!

I didn’t find the time to sew it, so I ended up starting the project nearly a year after, in February. That’s when I thought the giraffe could be a nice surprise for Valentine’s Day, even though we don’t really celebrate it that big here. And so it was, and it was named Valentina!

Primero no encontré el momento de coserla, así que acabé empezando el proyecto casi un año después, en febrero. Fue entonces cuando pensé que la jirafa podría ser una buena sorpresa para el día de San Valentín, aunque aquí apenas lo celebremos. Y así fue, y se llamó Valentina.

I varied it slightly from the instructions. For example, the arms were supposed to have knots as elbows, like the knees, but I didn’t do it that way. Moreover,  the legs and arms should be attached to the body with buttons, but for the legs I used snap fasteners instead (I like how they move this way!). And Valentina’s arms don’t move, they are directly sewn to the body.

La hice ligeramente distinta del modelo. Por ejemplo: los brazos también tenían que tener nudos a la altura de los codos, y no lo hice así. Además, tanto las piernas como los brazos tenían que ir unidos al cuerpo por un botón, pero yo usé automáticos en las piernas (¡me encanta como se le mueven gracias a ello!). Y sus brazos no se mueven, van cosidos directamente al cuerpo.

For the swimsuit I recycled a pair of old pajama trousers that I kept, because the fabric looks so nice. I used the trousers hem to thread some yarn through it and finished it tying a simple bow.

Para el bañador, reciclé unos pantalones de pijama con un estampado muy chulo. Usé el dobladillo de los pantalones para pasarle un hilo de petit point y le hice un lazo.
